Tunneling

Tunneling is a term referring to the technology used to allow information to pass from a private data network across a shared or public network transparently (e.g. maintaining the appearance of one logical network). In other words, from the end users' perspective, they are simply a node on the private network. They would have the same IP addressing structure and network access as if they were directly connected to the network in their office. Tunneling technology does not necessarily provide security services such as encryption and authentication. However, these services can be bundled in vendor provided VPN solutions.
